(Editor’s Note: One of my earliest lessons in Republican selective empathy occurred when I worked as a journalist in New Mexico. Our then Republican senator Pete Domenici was a hardcore small government conservative, except when it came to mental health issues. With that he regularly aligned with the Democrats. Confused, I asked my editor why the sudden soft-heartedness. Turns out Domenici had a daughter with severe disabilities. At 83, I expect he is now a big fan of Medicare. — Mark L. Taylor)

On “Real Time With Bill Maher” Friday night, the host criticized Republican candidates’ hypocritical stances on American immigration.
“New rule,” he said. “You can’t spend the first half of a debate bitching about how immigrants are ruining the country and the second half on the uplifting stories of your immigrant parents.”
“The Republicans all talk about building walls and deportations and making people learn English,” he continued.
Elsewhere in the episode, Maher discussed the politics of love and hate and spoke with comedian Sarah Silverman about Bernie Sanders.
