The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign today [12/11] announced that veteran journalist Matt Rothschild will replace Mike McCabe as the group’s executive director.
Rothschild was the longtime editor and publisher of The Progressive magazine, where campaign finance reform, clean elections and real democracy have been priorities since the days of the publication’s founder Fighting Bob La Follette.
“It’s an honor to accept this position at the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, and it’s humbling to follow in the giant footsteps of Mike McCabe, who has done so much to draw attention to the issue of how money has contaminated our political process,” Rothschild said. “We will never have real democracy in Wisconsin until we curb the power of money in politics, and I look forward to throwing my energy into this crucial battle.”
WDC announced in April that McCabe would be stepping aside as director at the end of the year.
“It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve this great organization as director for the past 15 years. I have been blessed to have the support of so many people from every part of Wisconsin as I’ve done the Democracy Campaign’s work,” McCabe said. “I am thrilled – and the Democracy Campaign is truly fortunate – to have my successor be someone with so many talents, such a distinguished reputation, and such a deep devotion to the cause of democracy. I know Matt is going to do a terrific job. I look forward to seeing Matt and the wonderful staff he inherits take the organization to new heights.”
